PATIENT SAFETY

Plastic surgery encompasses both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Whatever procedure you are undergoing, it is an important decision. Choosing a trained and qualified plastic surgeon to guide you through the process is the best way of ensuring an optimal result. SAPS member surgeons are accredited by the Singapore Medical Council as specialists in plastic surgery, which assures the appropriate, stringent pre-requisite knowledge and skills have been met, making them uniquely qualified to perform your plastic surgical procedure.

Patient safety is always foremost in our member surgeons’ minds. Please read through our section on safety and make the smart choice about your surgeon and the facilities where your procedure will be performed.

A PLASTIC SURGEON YOU CAN TRUST

Plastic surgery involves many choices, with the most important one being selecting a surgeon you can trust. While this does not guarantee the results of your surgery, choosing a SAPS member surgeon ensures that he/she:
  • is an accredited specialist in plastic surgery by the Ministry of Health, Singapore
  • has completed the requisite number of years training following medical school. In Singapore, this would include 2-3 years of training in surgery-in-general, followed by 4 years of dedicated plastic surgery residency training. Our surgeons who qualified overseas have gone through a similar rigorous program.
  • passed comprehensive written and oral exams
  • graduated from an accredited medical school
  • is up to date with continuing medical education every year

SAPS Member Surgeons are your trusted partners in reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery. SAPS is the only society representing qualified plastic surgeons in Singapore. Membership of SAPS recognizes your surgeon as a certified member of the Singapore plastic surgery community.

SAFETY AND RISKS OF PLASTIC SURGERY

Whether performed under local anaesthesia, sedation or general anaesthesia, no surgical procedure is without risks. By seeing a SAPS member surgeon, you can be assured that these risks are explained clearly, and that you will be able to make an informed decision regarding your chosen cosmetic or reconstructive procedure.

Prior to undergoing surgery, a proper medical history and examination should be performed. Be sure to disclose your full past medical history and prior surgery of any kind. Inform your doctor of any allergies and any reaction to prior anaesthesia, and of any current medications you are on. In particular, please reveal any traditional treatments you may be on. If you smoke, this should be stopped at least 1 month before surgery, and until you make a full recovery.

During the consultation, your surgeon will explain the various options available for what you require. This should include potential complications and how recovery will go. You will also be asked to sign a consent form for surgery that ensures that you fully understand the procedure, including its benefits and risks. It is important that you develop a trusting relationship with your plastic surgeon, so be sure to ask any relevant questions concerning the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative care.
